What was coming through in the creation of this piece was a feeling of a dark wet cave near the ocean…Wild and unknown. Ancient and newly-born. and then the goddess Sheila Na Gig came through - who is often depicted as an old hag naked holding her labia open. I feel there is something wildly terrifying about her that touches something existentially real within all of us. Especially when it comes to our age and sexuality, from ragged skin and bone to youthful appearances..society puts a lot of pressure on us to stay “seductively worthy” where ageism is a thing. Sheila-nagig calls us to inquire deeper into ourselves like that wet ancient cave with both terrifying and exciting curiosity to shift our perceptions of what is alive. -Angelphonics
